Khanye Colliery Becomes South Africa’s First Bettercoal Producer

28 Apr 2025  by worldcoal.
Canyon Coal’s Khanye Colliery, located in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, South Africa, will implement a four-year Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) under the Bettercoal programme to enhance its sustainability practices. As the only South African mine with Bettercoal Producer status, Khanye Colliery is setting a benchmark for responsible coal mining in the region.

The Bettercoal programme, an internationally recognized standard, promotes sustainable practices across the global coal supply chain. Khanye Colliery began its journey toward Bettercoal certification in 2022 by signing a commitment letter, followed by site assessments in 2023. These evaluations focused on the three ESG pillars—Environment, Social, and Governance—assessing the mine’s efforts in community development, employee well-being, and environmental protection.

Following the assessments, a tailored CIP was developed to align with the 144 provisions of the Bettercoal Code. The plan aims to strengthen the mine’s performance in key ESG areas, supporting existing initiatives such as water conservation and social upliftment programs. Canyon Coal COO Jarmi Steyn stated: “The coal industry’s existence, in the long term, depends on the strength of our sustainability efforts, highlighting the importance of participating in programmes like Bettercoal.”

The Bettercoal programme, with 14 years of experience, collaborates with coal producers worldwide to advance responsible practices. Its Standard and Continuous Improvement Framework tracks progress through quarterly assessments over four years, ensuring producers meet sustainability goals. A Bettercoal representative noted: “The programme supports Khanye Colliery’s existing environmental efforts, like water conservation measures, and its various social upliftment initiatives.”

Khanye Colliery’s participation in Bettercoal reflects Canyon Coal’s commitment to sustainable mining. The CIP will enhance environmental stewardship, improve employee welfare, and foster community development, aligning with global standards for responsible coal production. Steyn emphasized: “This partnership is about enhancing accountability and responsible practices in the sector.”

As the only Bettercoal Producer in South Africa, Khanye Colliery serves as a model for other coal mines in the region. The initiative is expected to inspire broader adoption of sustainable practices within the industry, contributing to long-term environmental and social benefits. By integrating the CIP, Khanye Colliery aims to maintain its leadership in responsible mining while addressing the growing demand for ethical coal production.

Canyon Coal’s collaboration with Bettercoal underscores its dedication to advancing sustainability in South Africa’s coal sector. The four-year plan will drive continuous improvement, ensuring Khanye Colliery meets rigorous ESG standards and supports the global transition to responsible resource management.
