Vattenfall to Operate Large-Scale Battery Facility Park in Netherlands

27 Apr 2025  by power-technology
Vattenfall, a major European energy company, has signed an eight-year agreement with Return, an international energy storage provider, to manage a new 50MW battery storage facility in Waddinxveen, located in the southern Netherlands. The facility, with a 100MWh storage capacity, will connect to the high-voltage grid operated by Tennet and is set to commence operations in the first half of 2026.

The battery park is scheduled to begin operations in H1 2026.

Under the contract, Vattenfall will handle the operation and optimization of the battery park, while Return will provide the necessary battery infrastructure throughout the agreement’s duration. This collaboration aligns with Vattenfall’s goal to expand its energy storage capabilities in north-west Europe, targeting up to 1.5GW of external large-scale battery capacity in the coming years.

Honey Duan, Vattenfall’s external battery storage systems manager, stated: “Flexible storage systems are becoming increasingly indispensable for a stable, fossil-free and efficient energy supply. In a volatile environment, the large-scale battery from Return will provide us with a valuable, flexible add-on to our increasing portfolio of renewable electricity production.”

The battery facility will support Vattenfall’s efforts to enhance energy market stability by integrating the system into its automated trading processes. This approach aims to minimize costs related to energy imbalances, optimize portfolio balancing, and provide flexibility to meet electricity market demands effectively.

Vattenfall, employing approximately 21,000 people, is one of Europe’s leading producers and retailers of electricity and heat. The company is committed to advancing renewable energy solutions to support a sustainable energy transition. The Waddinxveen project complements Vattenfall’s broader initiatives, including its recent final investment decision in March 2025 for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farms, located 85km north of Borkum, Germany.

The partnership with Return strengthens Vattenfall’s portfolio of renewable energy assets, reinforcing its role in promoting clean energy solutions. The Waddinxveen battery park will contribute to a more resilient and efficient energy system in the Netherlands, supporting the region’s transition to sustainable energy sources.
