Trina Storage, a provider of energy storage solutions, has partnered with FlexGen Power Systems, a specialist in battery energy storage and energy management software, to deliver a 371MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Houston, Texas, USA. This collaboration marks a significant step in advancing grid-scale energy storage in North America.

FlexGen will contribute system integration services and implement its HybridOS energy management software for the project.

The project incorporates Trina Storage’s Elementa 2 solution, designed to optimize energy performance and reliability while minimizing operational risks. FlexGen contributes its expertise in system integration and deploys its HybridOS energy management software, which enhances system efficiency and streamlines operations.

Trina Storage’s DC Block technology simplifies large-scale installations, enabling faster deployment. When integrated with FlexGen’s HybridOS platform, it supports effective asset management and ensures long-term operational reliability. This combination of advanced technologies positions the project to meet the growing demands of modern energy grids.

Terry Chen, vice-president of Trina Storage North America, stated: “This project is a testament to Trina Storage’s ability to provide a fully bankable, integrated energy storage solution that meets the evolving needs of the market. As our first grid-scale deployment in North America, this achievement reflects the industry’s confidence in our technology and our commitment to de-risking energy storage investments and supporting the energy transition in the region.”

Developed by SMT Energy, the Houston project is set to be Trina Storage’s largest grid-scale BESS in North America. David Spotts, co-founder and managing partner of SMT Energy, said: “This project reflects SMT Energy’s commitment to delivering bankable, high-performance storage solutions by uniting world-class technology partners to meet the growing demands of a rapidly evolving grid.”

In March 2025, FlexGen enhanced its HybridOS energy management system with an updated State of Health feature, further improving its capability to monitor and optimize battery performance. This update complements the Houston project’s focus on efficiency and reliability.

The collaboration between Trina Storage, FlexGen, and SMT Energy underscores the importance of integrating innovative technologies to support the transition to sustainable energy. By delivering a robust and efficient storage solution, the project contributes to enhancing grid stability and meeting the increasing energy needs in Houston.
