Heritage Aviation, Avfuel Bring SAF to KBTV

Heritage Aviation, in collaboration with Avfuel Corporation, has introduced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (KBTV) in Vermont. This milestone, achieved in February 2025, marks Heritage Aviation as the first Avfuel customer in the Northeast U.S. to offer SAF consistently, supporting the aviation industry’s shift toward sustainable practices.

On March 21, 2025, Heritage Aviation, a 100% employee-owned fixed-base operator (FBO) and FAA-certified repair station, welcomed Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak and Airport Director Nic Longo to its LEED Gold Standard facility. The visit highlighted Heritage Aviation’s role in advancing Vermont’s aviation sector and its commitment to sustainable operations. The event celebrated the FBO’s efforts to integrate SAF, a lower-emission alternative to conventional jet fuel, into its services.

“We were honored to welcome Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak to our facility, showcasing the dedication and expertise of our employee-owners, and our commitment to sustainability and the next generation of fuel,” said Matthew Collins, chief executive officer of Heritage Aviation. “We are thrilled to partner with Avfuel and to be its first branded FBO location in the Northeast to offer SAF, bringing the next generation of fuel to Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport.”

During the visit, Mayor Mulvaney-Stanak and Longo engaged with Heritage Aviation’s employee-owners to discuss SAF and the company’s focus on exceptional service, employee ownership, and sustainable practices. As an employee-owned business, Heritage Aviation fosters shared success and contributes to the economic development of the Burlington region.

The SAF, supplied by Avfuel and produced by Diamond Green Diesel LLC, is made using lipids such as used cooking oil through the HEFA SPK process. When blended at a target ratio of 30% SAF to 70% conventional jet fuel, it can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 24% compared to traditional jet fuel. In its pure form, SAF can achieve up to an 80% reduction in emissions, making it a key tool for sustainable aviation.

“We are proud to partner with Heritage Aviation—Avfuel’s premier branded FBO partner in Burlington, Vermont (KBTV)—to bring SAF to the Northeast,” said C.R. Sincock, II, Avfuel’s executive vice president. “It’s a testament to the FBO’s pioneering spirit, and commitment to its community and sustainability efforts.”

Heritage Aviation’s adoption of SAF at KBTV underscores its leadership in promoting environmentally responsible aviation solutions. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to reduce the aviation industry’s environmental impact while supporting the operational needs of general aviation at Burlington International Airport.
