SPEN, Hitachi Sign Scottish Grid MoU

24 Apr 2025  by renews
Hitachi Energy and SP Energy Networks (SPEN) have formalized their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in April 2025, aimed at advancing Scotland’s energy transition. The agreement focuses on deploying sustainable energy infrastructure to support the region’s goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

Under the MoU, Hitachi Energy will supply its EconiQ switchgear, a technology that eliminates the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), a potent greenhouse gas commonly used in power grid equipment. SF6 has a global warming potential 24,300 times greater than CO2. By adopting SF6-free EconiQ equipment, SPEN will enhance its efforts to reduce environmental impact while strengthening Scotland’s energy network.

The first deployments of the EconiQ 420 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) are planned for two new substations within SPEN’s network, which are essential to the UK’s broader energy transition. SPEN estimates that these installations will reduce CO2 emissions equivalent to those produced by approximately 27,600 passenger vehicles annually, significantly contributing to cleaner energy systems.

This partnership builds on a longstanding collaboration between Hitachi Energy and SPEN, focused on integrating renewable energy sources into Scotland’s electricity grid for consumer use. The agreement supports SPEN’s commitments to the UK energy regulator, Ofgem, ensuring the delivery of projects that align with national energy transition objectives.

Andre Gargi, global head of marketing and sales for Hitachi Energy’s high voltage products business unit, stated: “This agreement will help power Scotland’s future and contribute to its net-zero ambitions, and we could not be happier to be the ones enabling it to meet its targets with our SF6-free EconiQ switchgear. We are at a critical point in the energy transition journey and decarbonising the transmission network is a priority: this means modernising the country’s energy infrastructure to stimulate economic growth, reducing carbon emissions, and contributing to a cleaner, more resilient energy system for future generations.”

Pearse Murray, transmission director for SPEN, added: “Decarbonising the grid as we build the transmission network needed for the energy system of the future is a vital step on the journey to net zero and it’s great to have Hitachi on board as a trusted partner. This agreement marks a milestone moment for SP Energy Networks as we continue to invest to upgrade our network while reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. I have no doubt this partnership will help us deliver a cleaner, greener and better future, quicker.”

The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to sustainable energy solutions, enhancing Scotland’s infrastructure while prioritizing environmental responsibility.
