TotalEnergies stated that the SAF project will enable the refinery to produce 50,000 tons of SAF annually. Coprocessing allows the combined processing of hydrocarbons and biomass in existing refining units. The company expects SAF production to commence later this year.
The reconfiguration also involves advancements in green hydrogen production, electrification of processes, and the integration of battery-based energy storage at the Antwerp site. These upgrades aim to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
Additionally, TotalEnergies announced: “Due to excess capacity, we plan to halt operations of the oldest steam cracker at the Antwerp facility.” This change is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
The planned adjustments reflect TotalEnergies’ commitment to modernizing its Antwerp refinery while aligning with sustainable energy goals.
