Seismic Survey Completed for Novel Closed-Loop Geothermal in Hanover, Germany

17 Apr 2025  by thinkgeoenergy
In Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany, a 2D seismic survey has been completed to map the subsurface, laying the groundwork for a new closed-loop geothermal system to supply heating to the city. Led by Eavor GmbH in collaboration with enercity, the project aims to deliver sustainable energy solutions. With the seismic data now collected, drilling is scheduled to begin by summer 2025.

Launched in 2023 through an agreement between Eavor GmbH and enercity, the Hanover geothermal initiative plans to develop a 2 x 15 MW facility. This system is expected to generate up to 250 million kWh of heat annually, serving approximately 20,000 households in enercity’s service area. The project will partially replace heat currently provided by a coal-fired plant in Hannover-Stöcken, which is set to close between 2026 and 2030.

The project utilizes Eavor’s innovative Eavor-Loop technology, which enables geothermal energy extraction without relying on natural subsurface permeability or existing reservoir fluids. Eavor is also advancing this technology in a commercial-scale project near Geretsried, Germany, targeting initial power production in the first half of 2025. “Our Eavor-Loop technology is designed to provide reliable and sustainable energy, and we are excited to apply it in Hanover to support the city’s transition to cleaner heating solutions,” said a representative from Eavor GmbH.

The seismic survey, conducted over 16 days, gathered data from more than 100 locations. This information builds on earlier subsurface studies that confirmed the site’s suitability for the closed-loop system. Eavor will now analyze the combined data to refine drilling plans, ensuring the project aligns with technical and environmental standards.

The Hanover geothermal project represents a significant step toward sustainable energy in Lower Saxony. By leveraging advanced technology and thorough subsurface analysis, Eavor and enercity aim to provide a reliable, eco-friendly heating solution for Hanover’s residents, contributing to the region’s energy transition and long-term environmental goals.
