The Provence Grand Large floating offshore wind project is located 17 kilometres off the coast in the Mediterranean Sea, on a 100-metre deep site.

The floating wind pilot project features three Siemens Gamesa 8 MW wind turbines installed on tensioned line floats and designed by SBM Offshore and IFP Energies Nouvelles. The installation of the wind turbines was completed in October 2023.

Asso.subsea was entrusted with all marine works, including engineering, cable loading of export and inter-array dynamic cables, route preparation, cable installation and configuration of lazy wave, burial, and protection, along with Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operations for the landing point.

By covering a cable distance of approximately 21,000 metres, the company connected France’s inaugural floating offshore turbines to the Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône station, generating electricity equivalent to the consumption of 45,000 people.

For the work, Asso.subsea deployed the cable-laying vessel (CLV) Atalanti, which was specially converted in 2023 for this project to create the required cableway for the dynamic cable installation.

In addition, the trenching support vessel (TSV) Argo was used during the operations, including AssoJet III Mk2, the latest addition to the company’s portfolio of jetting ROVs with a 1,5 kW of total power, tailored for deep-water subsea burial operations.

The inter-array cables, export cables, and onshore cables were provided by Prysmian Group under a contract signed with the developers in 2019.

The 24 MW Provence Grand Large floating offshore wind project is led by EDF Renewables in partnership with Enbridge Éolien France 2 S.à.r.l, a subsidiary of Enbridge Inc. and CPP Investments.
