Goldbeck, PACE JV Sells 61-MWp Solar Park in Alberta

German solar developer and installer Goldbeck Solar on Thursday announced the sale of the 61-MWp Joffre solar park in the Canadian province of Alberta to Concord Green Energy, part of Canadian community builder Concord Pacific.

The solar power plant was sold by Goldbeck Solar’s investment company, Goldbeck Solar Investment and Pathfinder Clean Energy (PACE). The two are 50:50 joint venture partners in PACE Canada.

The Joffre solar park, completed by Goldbeck Solar North America, has been operational since December 2023. It is expected to generate more than 88 GWh per year, sufficient to supply more than 12,000 homes in Alberta. According to the announcement, its new owner already generates more than enough solar, hydro and wind energy for all of Concord Pacific’s communities.

Rob Denman, president of PACE Canada and managing director of PACE, said PACE entered the Alberta market in 2018 and Joffre was one of the first assets it started to develop. “With a significant pipeline of projects to follow and with the end of the development moratorium in Alberta we look forward to pushing on in this exciting market to bring significant clean energy and flexibility into the market,” Denman added.

Alberta on Wednesday announced certain policy changes that put limits to local renewables development, including a ban on project permitting on lands suitable for growing speciality crops. The announcement was made the day before the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) ends a pause on final approvals of new renewable electricity generation projects over 1 MW, the purpose of which was to allow the regulatory body to conduct an inquiry and address concerns related to “responsible land use and the rapid pace of renewables development.”

Goldbeck Solar Investment says it operates in 12 countries and has a project development portfolio of over 4 GWp and a portfolio of completed assets of over 500 MWp.
