A new joint venture will increase Renewable Power Capital’s (RPC) UK battery energy storage system (BESS) pipeline by an estimated 2.5GW.

Agreed with Spanish-based renewable energy company, Elmya Energy, the joint venture will see the two companies develop 4GW of BESS and co-located solar photovoltaic (PV) assets in the UK.

Elma Energy has contributed its existing pipeline of roughly 2.5GW including an estimated 1.5GW of transmission-connected projects, 200MW of distribution connected project in late development stages and 800MW of earlier stage projects.

The first of these projects is expected by be ready to build between 2025 and 2026.

“We are delighted to be significantly growing our UK battery storage pipeline, as well as diversifying into co-located solar PV,” said Kevin Devlin, CEO of RPC.

“This partnership is critical to RPC’s growing portfolio of renewables, which supports a flexible, decarbonised, and resilient grid. The UK is a leader in the battery storage sector and we at RPC are excited to be working with the very experienced team at Elmya Energy to contribute to the acceleration of this growth.”

The partnership follows RPC’s announcement earlier this year which saw the renewable energy company partner with developer Greenfield to build at least 500MW of battery storage in the UK.
