Rolls-Royce Unit Energises 31-MW Dutch Battery for Semperpower

01 Dec 2023  by renewablesnow
Energy storage developer SemperPower on Wednesday said it has taken over the operations of a 30.7-MW/62.6-MWh battery storage facility delivered by a unit of British luxury car maker Rolls-Royce in the Netherlands.

Touted as the largest energy storage facility in the country, the Castor battery is located in an energy hub in Vlissingen-Oost, a North Sea port city in northwestern Netherlands. According to SemperPower, its operation will support the further integration of renewable generation capacity into the Dutch grid.

Rolls-Royce Power Systems delivered the project on a turnkey basis, taking care of all civil works, electrical integration and automation.

"This project gives us all extra energy to further develop our pipeline, ensuring our continued growth and confirming our establishment as a key player in this emerging market,” said Dennis Schiricke, CEO and co-founder of SemperPower.

Castor is SemperPower’s second utility-scale energy storage system. The company said it is currently working on a 1.4-GW pipeline of battery storage projects, which it considers essential for speeding up energy transition.
