Municipal utility company Stadtwerke Münster will be conducting a detailed 3D seismic survey in the the city of Münster in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to better characterize the geothermal potential in the region. The survey will be carried out in winter of 2024 with EUR 5.7 million of funding support from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The city of Münster has made great progress in geothermal development since 2022, following positive results from detailed 2D seismic measurements made by the Geological Survey of NRW and also financed by the state from 2021 to 2022.. Since then, the city council of Münster has reaffirmed its support of geothermal with a unanimous affirmative vote for committing to geothermal energy as a mainstay in the city’s heat supply.

Before the end of 2022, Stadtwerke Münster was granted exclusive rights to the extraction of deep geothermal energy under the mining law. The utility set the target of supplying geothermal heat to the Münster grid by 2030. With detailed measurement to start soon, the aim is to gather more data to generate a three-dimensional subsurface model, thus increasing the chances of success of subsequent geothermal drilling.

“Data becomes projects. With the state-financed preliminary studies, we are serving the municipalities in North Rhine Westphalia the first, important findings about geothermal energy potential on a silver platter. That’s why I’m all the more pleased that Stadtwerke Münster is taking the next step and has made an investment decision for a climate-neutral heat supply in the future,” said Mona Neubaur, Energy and Climate Protection Minister.
