The Yuejin 3-3XC well of Sinopec in Tarim Basin, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, November 15, 2023. /CMGChina's petrochemical giant Sinopec has completed a 9,432-meter-deep oil and gas well, setting a new record for the deepest onshore directional well in Asia, said the company on Wednesday.

Located in the petroliferous Tarim Basin in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the record-breaking Yuejin 3-3XC well of the Shendi-1 project is expected to produce 200 tonnes of crude oil and 50,000 cubic meters of natural gas per day.

The achievement, secured after 177 days of drilling operations from May 1, marks significant advances in the exploration and development of ultra-deep oil and gas resources in China.

Up to now, the country had discovered a total of 352 oil and gas fields with depths of over 4,500 meters, China Media Group (CMG) reported.

The Tarim Basin sees its oil resources buried between 6,000 meters and 10,000 meters, accounting for 83.2 percent of its total, while the corresponding figure for natural gas is as high as 63.9 percent, said the CMG.

Cao Zicheng, vice-general manager of Sinopec Northwest China Petroleum Bureau, told CMG that "the successful test of this well further proves that the Tarim Basin is rich in ultra-deep oil and gas resources."

"We have explored and developed a system of exploration, development and engineering technology regarding complex ultra-deep oil and gas reservoirs, and secured phased progress in the deep-Earth exploration project."
