$750M Boost for Regional Clean Hydrogen Research H2Hubs

A coalition of states including Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania, and southern New Jersey has secured a substantial $750 million federal H2Hubs grant. This funding aims to bolster research, production, and distribution of clean hydrogen gas. The investment could potentially lead to the creation of tens of thousands of jobs in the region.

Out of approximately 80 concept papers submitted to the Department of Energy (DOE) for clean hydrogen hubs nationwide, MACH2 emerged as one of the standout 33 invited to submit a comprehensive application. Ultimately, it was among the exclusive seven selected for funding.

Key points:

Delaware-led coalition wins a federal H2Hubs grant of $750 million.

The funding will boost research, production, and distribution of clean hydrogen gas.

The investment could potentially create tens of thousands of jobs within the region.

Supporting Hydrogen Fuel Adoption by Long-Haul Truckers

Some of that production would likely go to help support the adoption of hydrogen fuel by long-haul truckers, an industry that could benefit from the fast-fueling, long-lasting energy. Air Liquide, a French chemical company that has its U.S. Innovation Center in Glasgow, is exploring the build-out of eight fueling stations along the Interstate 95 corridor that could help create an environment here that currently only exists in California.

Hydrogen, the universe’s most abundant element, is being increasingly recognized as a potential carbon-free fuel source. To harness this resource effectively for commercial vehicles, ships, and planes without causing environmental harm, advances are needed in hydrogen production efficiency through electrolysis and in establishing a nationwide distribution network.

Key points:

Hydrogen is increasingly viewed as a key carbon-free fuel source.

Advances are needed in hydrogen production efficiency and establishing a nationwide distribution network.

The Role of the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2)

The Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2), formed by Delaware in collaboration with southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey, is a nonprofit entity that will receive and distribute the funding. Despite the $750 million grant being 17% less than the applied $900 million, it represents a significant investment in advancing the region’s work.

Key points:

MACH2 is a nonprofit entity set up to receive and distribute the funding.

The $750 million grant, although less than applied for, provides substantial investment for the region.

Delaware’s Crucial Role in the Clean Energy Economy

Senator Chris Coons praised the selection, stating that it marked a monumental day for Delaware and its role in the clean energy economy. He emphasized Delaware’s resources, infrastructure, and workforce as being ideal for one of the country’s first hydrogen hubs.

Sen. Chris Coons lauds the funding as a monumental achievement for Delaware.

He highlights Delaware’s resources, infrastructure, and workforce as ideal for a major hydrogen hub.

Focus on Hydrogen Production and Storage

Several companies, including Air Liquide, PBF Energy, and Bloom Energy, are focusing on hydrogen production and storage. The Delaware City Refinery, owned by PBF Energy, is set to play a significant role in the MACH2 plans, with the potential to produce 137 megatons of clean hydrogen per day.

Key points:

Companies like Air Liquide, PBF Energy, and Bloom Energy are focusing on hydrogen production and storage.

The Delaware City Refinery could potentially produce 137 megatons of clean hydrogen per day.

In conclusion, the selection of the Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2) for federal funding is a significant achievement and a testament to the region’s potential in the clean energy sector. This funding will not only bolster the research, production, and distribution of clean hydrogen gas, but also create thousands of jobs. As Governor John Carney noted, this initiative represents one of the substantial opportunities presented by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The proactive efforts of Delaware companies and institutions in leading on hydrogen will now be amplified as they play a major role in MACH2. This milestone marks an exciting new chapter in the region’s journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future, and all partners are eagerly looking forward to commencing this transformative work.
