$8.3 Million in Federal Funding Boosts Clean Hydrogen Research in Connecticut

Representative John B. Larson (CT-01) announced $8.3 million in new funding through the federal Hydrogen Shot Initiative to advance clean hydrogen research and development at East Hartford’s RTX Technology Research Center.

The funding will be dedicated to three projects:

$3.8 million to develop a composite tank for liquid hydrogen storage in heavy-duty ground transportation

$3.3 million for high-performance hydrocarbon membrane electrode assembly

$1.2 million for electrochemically mediated air separation modules

The RTX Technology Research Center was awarded funding through the Department of Energy’s Hydrogen Shot Initiative, which is supporting new, clean methods to produce hydrogen and reduce the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% in one decade.

Clean hydrogen is a key piece of America’s carbon-free electricity future and is a growing source of good-paying manufacturing jobs. The Hydrogen Shot Initiative aims to make the deployment of clean hydrogen safer and more affordable.

“This funding will help drive the development of advanced fuel-cell and hydrogen infrastructure technologies to support the commercial adoption of clean hydrogen,” said RTX Chief Technology Officer Mark Russell. “Though the work will be led by the RTX Technology Research Center, achieving a net-zero carbon future requires collaboration. So, we’ll be teaming with leading universities, national labs and industry partners from across the country to make the most of this government investment.”

Representative Larson worked with his colleagues to secure a record $65 billion investment in clean energy transmission as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and passage of his Clean Hydrogen Production and Investment Tax Credit Act to spur the development of clean energy.

The $8.3 million in funding for clean hydrogen research and development in East Hartford is a significant investment in Connecticut’s future and the future of clean energy in the United States.
