Germany to Award up to €400M to Support Development of Commercial Fast Charging Infrastructure for Cars and Trucks

20 Sep 2023  by greencarcongress
The German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport (BMDV) will invest up to €400 million to support setting up fast charging infrastructure for cars and trucks. The funding program is targeting commercially used fast charging points with a charging power of at least 50 kW as well as the necessary grid connection.

The BMDV funding program is primarily aimed at craft and commercial enterprises as well as fleet users (such as transport and logistics companies, parcel services, car rental and car sharing providers as well as care services). In addition to charging points for cars, charging points especially for trucks are also eligible for the first time. Up to now, these charging options have only been supported in combination with vehicle procurement.

On behalf of the BMDV, the National Control Center Charging Infrastructure coordinates and controls the activities for the expansion of the charging infrastructure in Germany under the umbrella of the federally owned NOW GmbH. The application and processing will be carried out by the project management agency Jülich (PtJ).

The electrification of commercial fleets is crucial for the ramp-up of electric mobility. With this new funding program, we are expanding the BMDV's charging infrastructure funding landscape to include an economically very important charging scenario. Simply fast charging at the depot, depot or company fleet parking lot becomes a reality.

—Johannes Pallasch, spokesman for the management team of the National Control Center for Charging Infrastructure

Capital expenditure on fast charging infrastructure and technical equipment (e.g. electric power storage) as well as expenditure on grid connection and installation of electrical lines and connections including civil engineering are eligible for funding.

Each applicant company can submit exactly one application. In the case of affiliated companies, subsidiaries with their own legal identity submit their own applications. All applications from affiliated companies may not exceed a total funding amount of €30 million.

Grants from this funding call are limited to €5 million, regardless of the number of fast charging points requested per application.

The grant is on a cost-share basis: For small and medium-sized enterprises, a funding rate of up to 40% is possible, for large companies a funding rate of up to 20%.

The eligible expenses per charging point are limited to a maximum amount, which depends on the DC charging power of this charging point. With a charging power at the charging point of 50 to 149 kW, the maximum funding amount per charging point for small and medium-sized enterprises is €14,000, for large companies €7,000. For charging points with a maximum charging power of more than 150 kW, small and medium-sized companies receive a maximum of €30,000 and large companies €15,000.

The fast charging points must be built domestically and remain the property of the applicant company for at least two years from the date of commissioning according to the installation protocol.

The electricity required for the charging process must come from renewable energies.
