The Colorado Energy Office is set to launch the Geothermal Energy Grant Program later this year, likely no later than the 14th of November. This grant program has been authorized under HB22-1381 with the goal of supporting the use of zero-emission geothermal energy for electricity generation and space/water heating and cooling in homes, businesses, and communities.

Developers, building owners, local governments, utility companies, contractors, communities, geothermal installers, colleges or university campuses, and other organizations approved by the program are eligible for award of the grant. Eligible projects include:

New build or retrofit installation of geothermal primary heating or cooling systems

New build or retrofit community geothermal systems

Geothermal electricity generation

Design Studies

The program allows for different grant amounts depending on the type and scope of the proposed geothermal project. More details on these amount of grant awards are available here.

There has been an increase in legislative effort to develop the geothermal resources in Colorado and several states in Western U.S. from the Heat Beneath Our Feet bipartisan initiative. Earlier this year, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed into law the framework for new state regulatory approvals that enable expanded power generation from geothermal resources.
