PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGEO) Director Julfi Hadi has confirmed the Indonesian geothermal developer’s plans of expanding to several countries. The initial focus will be on Kenya, but PGEO is also exploring opportunities in Türkiye and Germany.

According to a press release, the state-owned geothermal developer is aiming to purse the ambition of being a world-class green energy company and build 1 GW of geothermal capacity within the next two years. The company will still focus on maximizing the domestic geothermal potential in Indonesia, with the international expansion only an addition to their business development plans.

Kenya has been identified as the primary country of focus for initiative. PGE believes that Kenya offers a positive business opportunity because of stable business growth and a government policy that encourages the growth of the geothermal sector, thus providing baseload power that is environment-friendly and cost-effective.

About a month ago, PGEO had announced plans of acquiring a geothermal working area in Africa. This announcement followed a working visit of PT Pertamina CEO Nicke Widyawanti to Africa as part of an Indonesian delegation. The signing of agreements related to this development has been said to coincide with the 2023 BRICS Summit, taking place on 22 to 24 August 2023.
