The government of Ukraine has approved a resolution on an experimental project to start the reconstruction of the Kakhovka hydropower plant, which was destroyed in June 2023.

At 2:50 am, Russian occupation forces blew up the 351 MW Kakhovka hydropower plant, according to Ukrhydroenergo. The utility announced that the plant was completely destroyed and could not be restored.

The plant, on the Dnieper River in the Kherson Oblast (province) of southern Ukraine, was put into service in 1956.

The experimental project is designed for two years. During the first stage, the government will design all engineering structures to prepare the necessary base for restoration. The second stage will begin after the de-occupation of the territories where the hydropower plant is located and provides actual construction work.

The project will be coordinated by the Ministry of Economy, and the customer of the work will be the state-owned utility Ukrhydroenergo.

At the HYDROVISION International 2023 keynote, Steve Walsh, a Ukrhydroenergo supervisory board member, gave an update on this project as part of his presentation on identifying opportunities and flagging threats on the horizon.
