PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE) has signed a Joint Study Agreement (JSA) with Chevron New Energies (Chevron) to investigate the potential of several geothermal prospects in South Sumatra, Indonesia. This was one of many agreements that PGE signed during the 11th Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mines New Energy Directorate (EBKTE) Conference and Exhibition.

The JSA aims to leverage the complementary strengths of PGE, the largest geothermal company in Indonesia, and Chevron, a multinational energy company committed to providing affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy. The expertise and technology of Chevron in geothermal exploration and subsurface studies combined with PGE’s expertise in geothermal management can create more value and a wider range of benefits in developing renewable energy.

Within the past two years, Chevron and Pertamina had already signed multiple partnership agreements for different projects. These include an MOU for low-carbon business opportunities in May 2022 and a joint study for green hydrogen and ammonia production in November 2022. More recently, a consortium between PGE and PT Jasa Daya Chevron was awarded the exploration rights for the Way Ratai Geothermal Working Area (WKP) in Lampung.

“With abundant renewable resources and an advantageous geographical location, Indonesia has all the elements needed to become a main source of green hydrogen and green ammonia. The synergy of PGE and Chevron is expected to have a broadly positive impact on communities, especially in the South Sumatra region. This cooperation is also one of the steps in becoming a 1 GW company in the next two years,” said Julfi Hadi, President Director of PGE.

“We have a long history of working in Indonesia and with Pertamina. Indonesia has become an important part of our Company Portfolio for many years. We look forward to leveraging the expertise and new technology that Chevron has in the field of geothermal to explore Indonesia’s renewable energy resources in cooperation with PGE,” added Wahyu Budiarto, Chevron Indonesia Country Manager.
