Calvera develops ‘world’s largest’ hydrogen tube trailer model for Shell refuelling stations in EU and US

Spanish-based Calvera Hydrogen has developed a hydrogen tube trailer model for Shell Hydrogen, with what it says is the largest capacity in the world.

Designed to transport one tonne of hydrogen on US roads, and more than 1.3 tonnes on EU roads – due to varying road weight regulations – with a working pressure of 517 bar (7,500psi), the carbon fibre trailer measures at 45ft long and has been developed for Shell Hydrogen to service its refuelling stations globally.

H2 View understands the two companies have worked together for more than two years on the engineering and technological developments for the project, which is planned to take its first steps in the US and Germany.

As a result of the framework agreement between Calvera and Shell, new units of the tube trailer model are being developed to cover the hydrogen transport needs for Shell’s refuelling stations in the US, Europe and the UK.

Calvera says the trailer is designed to operate at the fullest possible capacity and pressure to achieve maximum efficiency and cost savings.

“It is an honour for us to collaborate so closely with such a high-quality team as Shell Hydrogen,” said Ricardo Calvera, Technical Director of Calvera Hydrogen. “We would like to thank the company for their confidence in our technical capacity, experience and rigorous approach to safety.”

Oliver Bishop, General Manager of Shell Hydrogen, commented, “This new project furthers our growth and leadership in this rapidly developing global hydrogen supply industry, where Shell Hydrogen is betting on becoming a world leader.”
