Industrial biotechnology firm Praj Industries announced it has bagged an order to set up a sugarcane syrup-based ethanol plant from Godavari Biorefineries Ltd (GBL) in Karnataka. The company did not share the value of the order.

Under the contract, Praj will expand the existing ethanol manufacturing capacity of the plant to 600 Kilo Liter Per Day (KLPD), from the existing 400 KLPD, using sugarcane syrup. "When commissioned, this will become India’s largest capacity syrup based ethanol plant," the company said in a statement.

The capacity expansion planned by GBL is in line with the government’s National Biofuel Policy to increase the Ethanol manufacturing quantity in India using various sugary feed stocks.

Godavari Biorefineries, a member of the Somaiya Group, produces sugar, biofuels, chemicals, power, compost, waxes, and related products, using sugarcane and other biomass as the primary feedstock. Its manufacturing plants are located at Sameerwadi, Bagalkot district in Karnataka and Sakarwadi, Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra.
