Liquid Wind Carbon Neutral Fuel Project Progresses

06 Nov 2020  by Molly Burgess

Swedish electric utility company Övik Energi will provide the carbon dioxide and site for Liquid Wind’s first commercial-scale electro-fuel facility that will combine captured carbon emissions with renewable hydrogen to form carbon neutral fuel.

Liquid Wind today (5th Nov) announced the significant step forward, having secured the site on the north east cost of Sweden, where it will also have a carbon dioxide source from Övik Energi operations and access to low cost renewable electricity needed to produce the fuel.

In the Liquid Wind facility, green hydrogen will be produced from renewable electricity and water. This hydrogen will then be combined with the captured carbon dioxide in a reactor to form the methanol fuel.

Once functioning, the site will upcycle 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide into 50,000 tonnes of carbon neutral fuel that will be used by the marine industry for carbon neutral shipping.

Kristina Säfsten, CEO of Övik Energi, said, “Having the opportunity to be among the first in the world to capture and use biogenic carbon dioxide to produce electro-fuel is very exciting. This development opportunity strengthens our role as an energy supplier, enabling us to become more energy efficient in our production as well as reducing our carbon emissions.”

Claes Fredriksson, CEO of Liquid Wind, added, “We are delighted to be collaborating with Övik Energi. There are many synergies between our two companies which will be very valuable. It is also very exciting to have secured the site for our first facility, bringing us closer to delivering carbon neutral fuel to market.”
