Japan’s JERA Co. has completed its replacement of 13 consecutive gas turbine units at one of that nation’s largest thermal power plants.

The company finished work on the Unit 3 of Group 2 at the Futtsu Thermal Power Station. The unit resumed commercial operation last week.

The completed project involved six units in Group 1 and seven in Group 2 all replaced since February 2016. The overhaul is expected to decrease fuel consumption at the plant by 240,000 metric tons annually and carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 660,000 tons.

When JERA completed the replacement of Unit 5 in Group 1 last month, the company said efficiency from that upgrade would increase from 47.2 to 51.4 percent. The output capacity would also rise two MW to 167 MW, according to the company.

Overall, the combined-cycle Futtsu plant generates more than 5,000 MW in capacity. Tokyo Electric (TEPCO) is owner-operator of the gas-fired facility.
