Spanish electric services company Greenalia has announced plans to build four floating offshore wind projects in Gran Canaria.
The company has filed project and environmental planning applications, starting the development process.
Earlier this year, Greenalia submitted applications for its Gofio 50MW wind farm.
The Dunas, Mojo, Cardon and Guanche wind facilities will have a capacity of 50MW each. These will be developed off the south-east coast of Gran Canaria Island, close to Gofio wind farm.
With an installed capacity of 200MW, the four wind facilities will produce enough clean energy to power more than 280,000 homes, while offsetting approximately 560,000t of carbon emissions annually.
A company spokesperson said that during the construction phase, the projects will generate hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, contributing to the development of a green economy in the area.
Each wind facility will use four 12.5MW offshore wind turbines on top of floating foundations, anchored to the seabed at depths of between 61m and 92m.
The four wind power farms will be integrated with the grid through submarine cables similar to those used on Gofio Wind Farm.
A Greenalia statement said: “With the deployment of these projects, the Canary Islands will become one of the world leaders in floating offshore wind technology. Also, it will be possible to achieve the objective of developing 310MW of offshore wind, as set out in the Canary Islands 2015-2025 Strategic Energy Plan.”
