Waste Storage Facility to be Built in Russia’s Chelyabinsk Region

Russia’s national operator for waste management, NO RAO, has received a licence to build a final isolation point for radioactive waste in Ozersk.

The Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rosteknadzor) issued the licence for the placement and construction of a final isolation point for radioactive waste in the Chelyabinsk region near the closed city of Ozersk. The capacity of the storage facility will be 225,000 cubic metres of solid radioactive waste of classes 3 and 4, mainly from the activities of the production association Mayak.

As part of the first stage of construction, a complex of buildings and structures for administrative and domestic purposes, transport infrastructure, an access road to the site, internal and external engineering networks will be erected.

Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2021. Public consultations took place in Ozersk in July 2018, as a result of which, the project received a positive conclusion from the state environmental review.
