Metacon AB has been granted up to SEK 111 million in climate investment support from Klimatklivet to build a 10 MW electrolysis plant in Uppsala, Sweden, for local production of green hydrogen.
The plant will be located at Uppsala Vatten och Avfall AB’s Hovgården waste management facility outside Uppsala. The support represents 55 percent of the project’s total estimated investment of SEK 202 million.
At full-scale operation, the planned facility is expected to produce about 1,480 tonnes of hydrogen annually. The hydrogen will be supplied to industrial users and hydrogen refuelling stations in Central Sweden, where access to hydrogen is currently limited and largely dependent on transport from other regions and countries.
According to the approved application, the project is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 23,000 tonnes per year, mainly by replacing diesel in heavy transport and reducing the need for long-distance hydrogen transport.
The project will also integrate with existing operations at Hovgården. Oxygen generated through electrolysis is planned to be used in Uppsala Vatten och Avfall’s leachate treatment process, while heat from the process will be recovered for heating within the facility.
Metacon said the project will serve as a strategic reference plant in commercial operation, demonstrating the company’s technology, system integration and operations under real market conditions. The company said the plant is intended to strengthen its core business in the design, integration and delivery of hydrogen systems.
Construction is planned to begin in the second half of 2026, with commissioning expected in the first quarter of 2029.
