During its inaugural visit, the COSCO Sheng Shi unloaded 199 Geely passenger cars and 17 electric buses at Piraeus. COSCO Shipping Car Carriers, which manages a fleet of over 13 PCTC vessels, selected Piraeus for its regular route, highlighting the port’s growing role in the global automotive supply chain.
Su Xudong, CEO of Piraeus Port Authority, welcomed the development: “We are particularly pleased to welcome the MV COSCO SHENG SHI to the Piraeus Car Terminal. The launch of this new service is a strong vote of confidence in the capabilities of our port. The inclusion of Piraeus in a regular COSCO shipping line further strengthens PPA’s transshipment potential, confirms the port’s attractiveness, and is expected to generate significant multiplier benefits for the Greek economy.”
The Piraeus Port Authority is committed to enhancing its car terminal through investments in infrastructure, automation, and eco-friendly technologies. Su added: “Our strategy is focused on further reinforcing the Car Terminal, through investments in infrastructure, automation, and green technologies, firmly establishing Piraeus as a vital link in the global supply chain.”
Sustainability is a priority for Piraeus, which holds the distinction of being the first Mediterranean port certified as an EcoPort. The port participates in several EU-supported programs aimed at improving environmental performance and energy efficiency, aligning with global efforts to promote sustainable maritime operations.
The Port of Piraeus has been under the majority ownership of COSCO since 2016, when the company acquired a 67% stake. In 2021, COSCO increased its ownership by purchasing an additional 16% of shares from the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund. This strategic partnership has bolstered Piraeus’ development as a key logistics hub.
The new COSCO service is expected to enhance Piraeus’ role in facilitating vehicle transshipment, supporting Greece’s economy and strengthening trade connections in the Mediterranean. By expanding its infrastructure and embracing sustainable practices, Piraeus aims to solidify its position as a critical node in international supply chains.
